Here are some examples of my finest works. My main subjects are sunsets, interesting cloud formations and general skies.
There is nothing more inspiring than rays bursting through dark clouds or the sun slowly glding through an orange coloured sky.
I occasionally also take pictures of the forest and a local rural setting.

On this page you can find some examples of my digital space scenes.
I started making these roughly two years back and over the course of time I have tried to find my own style in this. Most of these works are photomanipulations, using my own cloud pictures. Some of them took me many hours to make while others are a matter of minutes.
Either way, the results are very pleasing.

Like before, clicking images leads to full size images. Some can be downloaded and used as desktop wallpaper. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to alter the image in any way, distribute it without my permission, or claim it to be yours under any circumstances.

On this page you can see a few examples of my recent 3D works. Because I do not own any 3D modeling software I cannot train myself in it as much as I could with Photoshop.
These works were made using Cinema 4D on school computers. While I still have a lot to learn, I can work with the basics and find myself really interested in becoming a better 3D modeller.
I tend to pick up new things really fast and come up with many ideas as i'm trying out functions or working on an existing assignment.


"Universal Database" - 3D Interface for year 3's final project

For this particular project I was allowed to pick my own subject and create something multimedia-ish. For my subject I chose my own sci-fi story that I have been working on for the past 11 years. I wanted to make some type of database which I could stuff with information and pictures of anything relevant to the story.

I started by making a set up of three screens that the user could click on and read information off.
Since the story takes place in my personally created galaxy, I chose to make a scale model of said galaxy and made it so that the user could click on various planets to obtain information about them and the creatures who live on them.
Each bit of information would have keywords that could be clicked on for more information about different subjects.

Due to the short time I had to work on this project, I only worked out six out of thirteen planets and only came as far as describing the planets themself. In the near future I wish to expand on this idea and work out some errors and add more information and images.

Here are some screenshots of the database. The screens were rendered in Cinema 4D, while everything else was set up in Director.




This screen is the opening screen. By clicking on the green orb, the user will start up the system.





The next screen appears. The scale model of the galaxy fades in, accompanied by sounds.





By moving the cursor over the planets below, a preview image appears on the middle screen. The planet glows red and the cursor changes into a crosshairs.





By clicking on a planet, the information will appear on the middle screen and an image of it fades in on the left screen.
The right screen is reserved for related topics which could be clicked on.




By moving the cursor over the image on the left screen, a full colour, highly detailed image of the planet pops up. When the cursor leaves said screen, the image fades again.


In the future I would like to also add short 3D animations of the planets rotating, and a quick tour through the galaxy.

Things I would do differently next time:
The fact that the screens on the left and right are in perspective gave me quite a lot of problems. If I'll continue to work on this project I'll make sure to use maybe just two screens and not make any in perspective.
I'd use less basic colours and more subdued tones.
Also, I'm thinking about using black screens, rather than green so I can get all my full colour pictures in them right away.
There is so much more information to add too, as well as images.

Working on this project was very interesting and I really love working with both 3D programs and Director.



3D "Gadget"


For this assignment I had to come up with a "gadget" which could be handed out or distributed through shops to promote a drink called " Crodino", which is a non-alcoholic, Italian appetizer.
I came up with a design for a bottle and glas holder which could be stylishly served to people at restaurants or collected for right at home.




This is the first, raw design. I wanted to keep it open and organic. In this version, it was possible for the holder to hold up to two bottles, and could be clicked on by mangets to other holders a person might have collected.
I quickly learned that in its current state, the bottles would easily fall out so I had to think of a solution.




I quickly came up with this design. I let go of the idea with the magnets and instead made the holder able to hold one bottle plus one customized glass. This item could now be served to people.
It still has its open, organic design and is in my opinion, very appealing to the eye.




Same design, but added a simple bottle to put things in perspective.


As you can see, I am very fond of lighting effects and enjoy thinking up interesting ways to light a scene. This item was my very first serious 3D model and I have to say I am quite proud of it.
I used simple forms now, but when I learn to do more complex things I'm sure I can make even more amazing things.

Personal info:

Ray Falling is my semi-official artist-alias, my real name is René Mulder.

I was born in the small city of Assen, Drenthe, in The Netherlands on the 25th of April, 1985; making me 22 years of age today.

I am currently studying in Zwolle, at the CIBAP trade school; here I take Multimedia and Graphics Design courses.
After this I plan to either work as a Graphics/Multimedia Designer or pursue my dream of becoming a Videogame Designer or try and publish a novel that I'm working on.

In time, depending on how much longer my studies will take, I wish to migrate to the USA where I will continue my work/studies and marry my girlfriend. Perhaps I will concider working/studying in England first and also look for publishers there.


Skills and Experience:

I can work with the following computer programs:
-Photoshop (much experience)
-Illustrator (some experience)
-Director (some experience)
-Flash (little experience)
-In-Design/Page Maker (some experience)
-Dreamweaver (some experience)
-Cinema 4D (some experience)

While I'm already very good with Photoshop and other design programs, I still wish to learn more about Flash, Dreamweaver and Cinema 4D.
I usually pick up new programs really fast. If it has my interest I learn it extra fast.

I also draw fairly well, though specialized myself a bit on a small amount of subjects.


About my art:

I don't always find the title 'artist' suitable, but I guess someone who creates art is an artist right?

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. As a kid I was always creating things, which gave me great joy.
At some point I started drawing comics based on a silly idea, which has grown into an epic novel idea over the course of the past 11 years, which I like to call my life's work.
With the rise of the computer age came new means to do art and so I started drawing characters, sceneries and random things using MS Paint.
A few years ago I finally discovered the excellence of Photoshop and quickly adopted a new style and made it my own. The next step for me would be 3D (three dimensional) art.

At some point I picked up photography and started taking pictures of the sky and the nature around me. Today I use many of these pictures in my digital photomanipulations as you will see on my Digital Art page.
Occasionally I wrote poetry and short stories, but my heart belongs to the visual arts and novel writing.

Most of my creative energy is going to digital drawing and photomanipulation at the moment, but I intend to start writing more this summer as well. Photography has taken the back seat a little, but I wish to pick that up as well to expand my collection.

I have only one website to show here at the moment unfortunately. Since I am still learning I have not been able to make many websites yet. I do however love to do so and am very interested in learning more about webdesign.
I always have many ideas but lack the technical knowledge to work those ideas out.

I do have one website to show, which is in fact my first ever website. I made it as part of an assignment for school. I had to make a website for our imaginary design agency.

I learned a lot from this first design. There are things I'd do differently next time of course and I hope to learn more technical things so I can come up with more complex ideas and designs.

I want to tell you everything about this project of mine but I won't. This is my life's work and is still in the making.
I have been working on this sci-fi/fantasy story for more than eleven years now and as much as i want to tell the whole world about it, I have to keep it as much of a secret as possible untill it's finished and registered.

So instead of giving away any details I'll show you a few images of characters, scenes and vehicles that I designed.

Keep in mind that all of my work is my intellectual property and you are not to edit works, copy them or use it as them as if your own.

An older character profile I made. My style is constantly changing and evolving, much like my designs.

I'm very happy with this look, which I made so my characters wouldn't look so childish as they did when i designed them when I was 12.




A newer design for my characters. For this image I tried to mimic 3D techniques in Photoshop.




Same as above. These were meant to be some type of teaser posters. I especially love this one. Very detailed face too.




My most recent drawing of my character. I'm trying for a new colouring style. This was a study on light and shadow, but also trying out new poses as I tend to draw my characters in the same fashion.
